Painting a roof isn’t like brain surgery. But it does pay to know what you’re doing. When painting a roof you should have the right know how and equipment.

Check the Forecast
It pays to look ahead. Check the weather Bureau site because you’ll need a few days of fine weather. Rainy or hot days are not your friends when painting a roof.
Clean the roof
Prepare your roof for painting by cleaning the tiles (or metal sheets) thoroughly using a pressure washer. This will remove any mould, fungus, moss or other debris. Cleaning leaves your tiles dirt-free and ready. You will be able to identify tiles that are cracked or broken.
Repair the roof
After cleaning, repair/replace tiles, ridge cap and mortar re-pointing s in need of repair or replacement, this should be done prior to painting. Any mortar work carried out and left for 24 hours to ensure it’s completely dry.
If your roof is metal, it’s really important to remove all traces of rust at this stage. Replace loose nails with Tek screws.
It’s a good idea to check for other faults or possible problems preceding painting (eg. removing birds nests, rotten timbers). Lifting tiles after your roof has been painted should be avoided so check now!
Apply a fungicide
Last thing before painting, apply a suitable to prevent mould, lichens from re-growing on your roof. This is important on tiled roofs.
Paint the Roof
The roof must be completely dry before painting. And you can’t paint if its too hot. So before you start check the weather forecast! (I know I said it earlier, but it’s important.)
It’s also vital to take the necessary safety precautions. Wear protective clothing and keep your working area is safe. Working with heights, sometimes slippery conditions, and with pressurized hoses is always dangerous.
If you’re a complete rookie, consider leaving it to the professionals. This type of work should never be attempted on a gusty, windy days.
Only use paint that is a genuine roof paint/membrane; it should come with a 10 year guarantee. This will prevent water from piercing and soaking into your roof tiles. When you have chosen a good quality roof paint, be prepared to give the area at least 2 healthy coats, allowing it to dry in between coats.
